Back to Where I Started
I ONLY play acoustic now (like I did at the very beginning of my guitar journey). I'm back to where I started: Fender thin celluloid picks. The only update is opting for these abalone picks after trying them out vs. the usual shell or any other variety...and ordering some more from Sweetwater. Maybe it's my imagination but these basically translucent abalone picks (translucent… read more except for the abalone design "highlights") seem more durable in a thin celluloid and less prone to wear-related scratchiness in sound or roughness on the pick surface. I also like the way they look. I play with primarily the rounded shoulder of the pick, but not exclusively and often with a hybrid style. I think for many years Pat Metheny used Fender thins using the rounded shoulder. That rounded shoulder approach? It gives you kind of a "medium" pick but a smoother feel and tone than using the pointed end of a medium IMO. I get 3 surfaces then with each thin celluloid pick (since I use the regular pointed end as well). I do value that regular point for the proverbial treble sheen, studio-tight rhythm, or for taking things into a kind of hippy dippy, almost "distressed" tone territory. I've been playing guitar for about 50 years. Happy to be using these "beginner picks" again.
