Finally Found My Favorite Pick

Tom

While picks may not be as glamorous an accessory as a great stereo digital delay, I've recently come to realize they are one of the most important components of my playing. I recently got very serious about playing guitar again, focusing a lot on improving my picking technique. I had always used Fender 'mediums', but was disappointed to learn they no longer produce those picks read more with the embossed Fender logo, which I had come to rely on for gripping the pick. So my SW rep sent me a set of various picks, and through trying them, I realized I needed a heavier pick for the fast alternate picking I was striving to learn. Once I decided I liked the feel of the Ultex picks the best (even without an embossed logo, the grip is just right), I noticed they had this "sharp" version available. So I ordered 2 packs of the regular shape, and 2 of the sharp version, each in .9 (.88 for the regular) and 1.0. After playing around with all 4, I think I've finally settled on the .9 thickness in the Sharp version. Fast, alternate-picked passages just seem the best for me using this pick. Honestly, I couldn't feel much difference between the .9 and 1.0 when playing, but I ended up liking the .9's the most, because those being slightly thinner, pick slides are more pronounced. All these seemingly minute factors to decide on a seemingly basic accessory for my playing, but I've learned that it really does make a difference.
