I am only an occasional uke player, and can't do comparisons with other models, but this instrument has a nice comfortable action and a clear loud tone that I particularly like. Seems like an excellent choice for $... The tuning machines are of the basic closed chrome no-name variety but seem to work okay so far.

I picked up one of these Kalas as a demo model for a little discount, and I'm very happy with the purchase. When the uke arrived, it took me a long time to find any signs of use on it, and those are a couple of tiny nicks in inconspicuous locations on the body. I'd have no reservations about buying a demo of some other instrument from Sweetwater in the future. The tuners are nice and smooth, and there are no sharp fret ends. The action is good. Nice job, Kala! And thanks for another great purchase, Sweetwater!
