I have the older brother of this concert uke. (baritone) The same beautiful sounding sustain. It also has a unique sound. Warm and bright. This is such a happy sounding ukulele. The gloss finish really brings out the wood tones. Oh no......the dreaded ukulele disease! UAS. (ukulele acquisition syndrome) So many sizes, so many diff. wood tones. So I never really thought I"d be interested in playing a uke until a good friend, and Sweetwater academy instructor, Sunny Taylor Berry serenaded my family and I after I had eye surgery. What a gift that was! She inspired my Mom and I go to buy one. We both got the same style Kala except that Mom got a tenor and I got a concert. Both are so easy to play and sound beautiful!… read more We absolutely love the wood grain! They are gorgeous instruments! I must add that when I picked mine up in the retail store, I got the demo instrument as it was the only one left. The sales person (wish I could remember his name) was disappointed that it took 20 minutes to have the shipping box retrieved from the warehouse so he gave me a wonderful carrying case for my uke at NO CHARGE! Sweetwater does customer care like no other!

I bought this for my daughter -- she's currently traveling a fair amount and we both figured a ukulele makes sense. The ziricote veneer is spectacularly beautiful -- the grain is amazing and reminds me a bit of NASA images from Jupiter or Saturn. I appreciate the matte finish on the neck. Looking at the soundhole it appears to me that the top may actually a very thin solid piece… read more of birch or cedar with a ziricote veneer. The plies on the back and side appear to be mahogany of some sort. The tone is surprisingly full and rich for a laminated instrument -- perhaps owing to the thinness of the wood used. It feels like a fairly delicate instrument, so I'm glad I got the Gator gig bag with it (also highly recommended.). Really, the only negative I can find so far are the tuners. The feel a bit shoddy, and I think I'd prefer a set of nice open tuners to these cheap sealed ones. Otherwise, highly recommended.
