A little disappointed with this oneā¦
Right out of the box, this ukulele had extremely gritty frets and horrible fret sprout. I had to file and dress the fret ends to make it playable without feeling sharp metal grabbing at my hand. The fretboard and bridge were also extremely dry; almost to the point of the wood cracking. I had to use a few applications of fretboard oil to get the wood rehydrated because it just soaked… read more it up as quickly as I applied it. On to the positives, the teak wood is very nice looking. The grain patterns really look great. Also, the saddle and nut were set up very well with a very comfortable action. The tone is about what you'd expect from a ukulele. It definitely has that familiar plink, and the projection is really impressive for a laminate top. I totally understand that this is a lower priced option as far as ukuleles go, but the poor fret work was real disappointing. All in all, I think Kala is close to having a great model here if they would focus more on the fret work and take a little better care of the fretboard and bridge wood. I gave it 3 stars because most people aren't going to want to mess with fixing fret sprout and polishing frets on a brand new instrument.
