HD-2018 (2018)

Ross Johnson

I have a half dozen Martins and I love the HD-28! The Martin DX1RAE is a very, very good alternative, however it does not resonate as well, it does not have the complex overtones that the solid rosewood gives you and it will not age over the years as well as a solid wood guitar. I have also played the D-28 which is a great guitar, the main sound difference is that the HD-28 has read more the scalloped bracing which gives a more "played in" and "open sound" and the D-28 has a slightly tighter and puncher sound. Both have great bass without being "boomy". Whichever Martin you choose I would definitely recommend the 2018 version over last year"s model. Pros:Great rich sound with complex and beautiful rosewood overtones. I really like the 1.75 nut Has a great satin neck and I love the neck shape, it is easy to play, it much closer to a Taylor neck than a vintage Martin round C shape. The Schaller grand tune 18:1 tuners are great, even better than open back Grovers (which are very good)Feels amazing as the guitar resonates against your body. The fit and finish are wonderfulComes with a very good hard case. Cons: The size of a dreadnought can feel too big for smaller players. If you don"t have a sales engineer I would highly recommend asking for Taylor Perry when you call Sweetwater.
