These Will Tame Your Twang
These were not for me, but it's silly to criticize the string because I picked the wrong ones. If you have a guitar that you want to tame your spanky single coils, these will do that. But they can kill your tone on humbuckers. If you are used to the sound and response from a steel core string, these may surprise you with their mellowed tone. These may do well on slide guitar applications.… read more I did not try them on a slide, but thee might be just right for that.
Good Strings
Nice strings at a good price and intonate well. I tried out various string gauges on my Les Paul Junior and these are matching well with its dogear P90 that has A2 magnets and wound hot at 9.2k. With these strings, I can roll-off the guitar volume and get a bright, jangly acoustic tone and crank the volume and get a thick, ripping distortion. I wasn't hearing this variety with heavier… read more strings. With regard to how they feel, I setup the action to Gibson spec as to avoid fret buzz and also have decent string tension as I don't like effortless fretting which also impacts tone as well. With a proper action setup, these feel great. Compared to heavier strings, they are easier to fret, bend and put tonal inflections via bends, slurs, frills but it is also easier to throw out the intonation of the plain strings if fretting to hard or too far behind the fret so they require a lighter and accurate touch. Having a standard gauge E, A and D keeps the tone nice and fat while the thinner bottom strings afford a bright and jangly tone that can be shaped quite well with the guitars tone control.
Warmer tone and softer feel
Been playing D'Addario for 30+ years and was happy until I tried these. Softer feel is not only easier on my fingers but my bending is more expressive and fun. Warmer tone is a plus for blues. I've been playing these twice a week for a year now and love 'em.
THE rock n roll guitar strings
I've used plenty of electric strings over my 46 years of playing, and whenever I deviate for a year or so, I always seem to come home to Ernie Ball. There's just no compromise. Sure, strings are strings and they all come from the same factories and all. But the hybrid set is where it's at for me. Beefier tone on the bottom with complete wailing away on the top end strings. And… read more the nickel coatings makes my guitars sing. Like the guy before me said: I can't remember the last time I broke one of these strings...actually, I just did. I was playing a gig in 1985 with these and one broke. It probably was the guitar's fault...
These have been my go to brand and size for 15 years
Great sounding and feeling strings. Light small strings allow for easy bending. Heavier tops strings give you beefier tone. Can't remember the last time I broke a string.
