Great Pickup!
I just swapped the 57 Classics out of my 68 RI Les Paul Custom for the 490/498 combo. I've always been a fan of these pickups and now I have it with all the benefits of a 68 Reissue. Had to replace all the electronics and tuners as well. Very happy with the decision, the guitar plays and sounds incredible now.

the idea was to use this to coil split to give alternative tones to my les paul. well got that and a combination of tones that lasts for days. very happy here!!

The problem with this pickup is that it is a cheap mass produced one. The only positives are that it is relatively cheap and sounds ok clean. Otherwise it's horrendously muddy and clangy. How anyone could like it is beyond me. I experimented extensively with the height of it, trying in vain to get a good tone from it but I was wasting my time. Spend a bit more and get the 57… read more classic, which is better by a country mile. Stay away from the 490R.
