Very hot
I picked up an HSS set with the Modern in the bridge for a Strat copy, wired with High Frequency Tilt & Voice 2 on push/pull. The Modern is very hot and syrupy. If you are looking for high gain with loads of mid range, it"s terrific. It"s quiet and focused like an 81, and pulls pinch harmonics with ease. Voice 2 is a little tamer, like an overwound passive HB. The coil tap option… read more is terrific for position 2/4 on a Strat. It snaps like a classic underwound single. Love it. But... Both voices were too much for my tastes. It completely overpowers the SA/SP singles. I swapped mine for a Classic, and am much happier. I highly recommend the Modern in an HH configuration for high gain players; but not so much with HSS/HSH set ups. If you want the single coil snap as an option, get the HH set and wire the middle position for coil taps. It"s great. Btw, I found the HF tilt option to be pretty useless on the Modern.
