It's a very good pickup in the high gain category, the clean is a little more muddy than I personally like.

2 in the Bush
I was playing gigs at local bars and clubs but couldn't find any trim at the end of the night. After installing an EMG 85 into my guitar the ladies are crawling all over me and it's awesome. Thanks to EMG pickups I'm now 2 in the Bush. Thanks Sweetwater

I've wanted to try active pickups for a while and decided to put a set in a custom built 'S' body guitar I have. As far as EMG goes, the common thing is to go with 81/85 setup. But the 81 has a ceramic magnet, which are a bit harsh sounding, so I opted for 85/85 instead (85 has alnicoV magnet).OMG !!! These pups are fantastic! They Sing and sustain beautifully.
