So good
In some ways these remind me of the 59 tribute pickups that came with my 2014 les paul traditional. But better. The 59's were a little annoying and I ended up pulling them out in favor of Slash alnico pro II's. This Antiquity has that lively feel they had though but more open and clear. Not so "ratty". But thats not to say that these don't have hair to them because they do.… read more I was worried these would be too clean and lack balls. Thats not the case. They are touch sensitive and have punch while at the same time being open and full. Backing of the volume is a treat with these. They seem to keep more high end than my alnico 2 pros when brolling off the volume. They clean up well. Really impressed with the volume options on this. I've sat on the fence for years after reading others reviews about swapping out magnets on this to get more oomph. I didn't want to have to mess with that. I honestly don't want anymore oomph out of them. They sound great with even heavy distortion. I compared them to my studio with classic 57's and the Antiquitys have more personality. The 57's are smoother for sure. The Antiquities have more of that unbalanced coil sound to them. I like both. Variety is nice I only have the bridge and I'm not thinking about trying the neck as the slash neck overpowers this a bit unless I back off the neck volume to about 8 and then they mesh really well. I've played them through my Marshall DSL40cr, katana 50 and Yamaha THR10x and they all sound great.
Just what I expected from SD
Some years ago I had a set of Seth Lover pups installed in a big jazz guitar. They sounded great. The Antiquity Bridge pickup tone is just a bit smoother and lower output, maybe due to the A2 magnets. I installed this one into a new Yamaha Revstar (nice guitar by the way).
Tasteful and a pleasure to play
These are absolutely the best bang for buck if you're looking for affordable/superb paf tone. They are wound, aged, and assembled in the custom shop by seymour himself or MJ (manager of the custom shop). These sound a cut above most of their production models which speaks volumes. The ant. aren't wax potted and it isn't too much of a problem if your wiring is top notch. A lot of… read more the magic comes from it not being wax potted IMO. You get a very 3d organic tone from them when compared to other potted pickups. Very dynamic and respond well to the vol. knob being adjusted or pick attack. Can go anywhere from lush cleans to that perfect crunch with a Carl Martin Plexitone. I thought I would dislike the aged Alnico 2 magnet for the bridge, but it sounds heavenly with a 250K pot for the bridge. Still plenty of bite. These went into a Gibson CS-336 that I was going to sell, but they perfectly balanced the natural tone of the guitar and added a lot of warmth with the organic 3d texture. The antiquities basically saved that guitar. I love it now. You can't go wrong with these! Get them now!
