Fair Design, Poor Execution
This is a Shubb C4B cheater with a 7.25" radius, -for older Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters. I bought this strictly for use on my 1963 Telecaster. The short story is that it does not work well. Sometimes it bends a string and the tuning goes off. This is because of a small bearing that is slightly too small for the race it occupies. This causes a slight wobble in the device,… read more and thus, inconsistent pressure on the strings, —causing the tuning to go off. Too bad, as the Shubb sports a much lower, thinner profile on the neck and gives your fingers more room. The Dunlap is too bulky and cramps your hand when using the first two frets after the capo. Otherwise, Dunlaps work darn well. The Dunlap has a lot of rubber on the capo, and this allows it to accommodate an older Fender neck radius. BUT, after a year or two, while the Dunlap still works on all other guitars, it will have problems with Fender's 7.25" neck radius. DARN Shubb! All they have to do is make that bearing fit snug and they are in business. On stage, I do not have time to belabour capo re-tuning. And ALL my instruments have accurate intonation that is checked regularly.. While I rarely use a capo, I have been using Dunlap capos on my instruments for many years. —E.g., Jazz arch-tops, Gibson SGs, Fender Teles and Strats, Ovations (for the road), and two pre-war Martin flattops that I do not use live (too much worry —I don't have Clapton money). Oh yeah, I have an old fender bass for emergencies. Any prudent player should own one. About 20 years ago, one of the lads sold me his old Mustang fender bass (30 inch scale). I swapped the PUPs with Seymour Duncan's, and I swear it sounds better than most P basses and plays like butter. PAIX.
