Very Good Pedal
Like all Catalinbread pedals, the Cloak has excellent build quality and fantastic sound. I've always been a fan of Matthew's Effects' Astronomer, so I was intrigued by the thought of that kind of shimmer combined with a "room" type reverb. While I initially didn't like the room reverb on its own, I now love how it sits in certain mixes without cluttering up the upper mids the way… read more some long-tail reverbs can do. It also sounds fantastic on keys.
The graphic is my favorite part
To be brutally honest the graphic on this pedal is what sold it to me. A few video demos seems really promising to me as well, and granted the actual reverb sounds great! However to me shimmer is not my thing, and it's really a one trick pony. I think Catalinbread makes excellent products and I plan to try their other reverbs for sure. If you are not into shimmer reverb then… read more I would suggest looking at the Talisman or Topanga reverbs because those are sure to please for the reverb lovers out there.
Disappointed at first...
To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed when I first plugged the Cloak into my pedal board, for it really didn't sound any different from some of my other pedals, especially the Catalinbread Talisman. So I tried it at the end, the middle, then up front, still mush, not worth the extra price when I felt the Strymon reverborator could actually do some of the same. So I called for… read more an RA to send it back, but while waiting, I decided to turn all other affects off, including the speed and depth on the Princeton amp. So now I was only hearing the Cloak, and kept twisting and experimenting, finally discovering that less is actually more with the rightside buttons turned almost off, with the left side at 1 and noon. Couldn't stop playing! Even the wife said, "What sounds so pretty?" And that's when I decided to hang on to it. I also found I could gradually add some pedals back in, such as the compressor and a couple of others, even the amp. But to be totally honest, now that I'm going to keep it, I don't need some dark arts figure staring at me, so I'm going to look for the best images on all the free address labels I keep getting, and give the pedal some authority over that pathetic looking fellow!
Shine like the sun
This is a quality-made pedal that fountains a shimmering array of glorious harmonics! Inspiring and easy to use, the Cloak is only limited by your imagination. With simple sound-shaping controls, it's easy to shape the tones and effects you're looking for. It works well with all the different guitars I've tried but will present as other-worldly if you feed it the right one! Innovative… read more and different, I am really enjoying this pedal! It's currently my go-to for praise/worship music.
