Absolutely Magnificent
Have been playing this amp basically non-stop since it arrived last week, it's been on longer than it's been off... Amazing tones across the range, pairs beautifully with my Rickenbacker, Tele, and Les Paul. The attenuator is a game changer, and allows me to play at bedroom volumes when needed, and crank it when I'm home alone. The voicing settings offer a tremendous amount of variability… read more and you can easily get crystal clear sparkly clean tones, or get as dirty as you want. The only thing I wouldn't score as an A+ is the reverb. If you're comparing to say, a Fender Deluxe reverb, this amp is going to fall a little short, and at this price point that's a fair comparison. With that said, the reverb is nice and adds some additional versatility. I didn't buy it for the reverb so I can live with what it has. All up, this is easily the best sounding amp I've ever owned and I'm thrilled with my purchase. If you're in the market for a tweed amp, I would highly recommend. If your looking for a powerful amp that still sounds excellent at low volumes, there really isn't anything better. Buy it!
Sound is incredible, but.....
My intro to Tone King was in the mid '90's. I tried a low-wattage used model at a guitar store, and the tone was like butter melting on hot biscuits - just dreamy! So 28 or so years later, I decided to buy the Falcon Grande. When it arrived, I unpacked it and set it up, giddy like a kid on xmas morn. First, the good news: the tone was what I remembered. Creamy and warm. However...… read more the Reverb was not working. I tried to find an "on" switch, and perused the manual, but nope, not working. I also found that the speaker would "fart" at me if I laid into a note or chord. As such I have now lost confidence in the manufacturer, and I returned the amp. I learned from my tube amp guy that the company had been sold a few years back; perhaps its the same as what happened when CBS took over Fender or when Thomas Organ bought Vox. Either way, I'm done (although I'd take a chance on a 15 or so year old one). I'm now using my '67 Bassman with a small 2-12 cab.
Falcon GRANDE!!
Great amp, I play rockabilly and swing blues and play a Gretsch Silver Falcon thru it. The three voicing"s are spot on and I can dial in as much tube saturation to get the perfect sustain and grit I need, the foot switch is an added bonus and is noiseless. The cherry on top is the attenuator, it works perfectly, and I"m getting great recordings using it. I did change out the power… read more tubes to electro harmonix 6L6GC"s this added a noticeable change in power output and increased headroom. I love simplicity, if there are too many knobs I get frustrated quickly, I"m a plug and play type player. The voicing"s sound like a deluxe, a tweed and a supro. Which all are usable and record well. I tried a Mesa boogie Mark 5 35 and returned it for many reasons, and although that amp was cool but it lacked the voicing"s this amp delivers, not to mention was noisy when switching channels and the lead channels all sounded the same to my ears. This amp looks stellar, the fit and finish of the amp is perfect. It"s a great grab and go amp. The only thing I put in front of the amp is an MXR Carbon copy, with a slap back setting. All in all this amp is staying with me FOREVER! I would replace it if the unthinkable ever happened. I should also mention it does keeps up with my drummer volume wise. Play on!
