Great Amp!
I've had this amp almost a year now, and it gets better the more you play it. The original speaker was the Emminence Z special speaker, which I kept in for 6 months. I swapped out with a Celestion Blue, and the amp just has more punch to it now in my ears. Don't get me wrong, the original is good, but the Blue takes it up a notch. Once you dial in your tone, the amp just surprises… read more you so much. So musical, its hard to describe. I've only gigged with a band a few times (Covid-19), but always get compliments on the tone. Primary guitar includes my Suhr SSH Strat, and an Gibson ES-Paul. Both guitars have their own voice. The cleans are great, the small gain is beautiful. The ES Les Paul makes the amp come alive. I have the blond model, which looks great on stage. Its 15 watts and plenty for any gig. I highly recommend the amp,
The Dr.Z/Z-Plus Is Really,Really Good!
Astonishingly good tones with my Telecaster. The Dr.Z/Z-Plus and my new Telecaster are my first electric guitar/amplifier purchase. I have played acoustic guitar for 46 years and recently decided to mix in some electricity to my repertoire! I grew up on Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones,Jimmy Hendrix, Santana, Jeff Beck and let's not forget Eric Clapton. This amp and a Telecaster… read more guitar will do all of that. If you want raucous, it will do that. If you want tame it will do that. This amp is my little beast! It is a full featured amp, therefore, you will find that you are able to dial in a very wide selection of sound characteristics. Anything from jazz to metal. This amp really sounds good, and as the volume level and playing intensity increases, the sound quality increases, the Z-Plus loves volume. Luckily it's Master Volume Control will allow you to crank this amp, if you like, without killing you! The Z-Plus is able to provide way more volume than is needed for a bedroom. For me the higher the volume the better this amp sounds. The Master Volume Control is allowing me to practice in my bedroom, at a comfortable sound level, even though the amp is providing the "distortion I want. I like the sound of a tube amp being driven. Z-Plus Will do that, at a comfortable sound level. I am really satisfied with this amplifier, and though it is pricey for a first amp, "Buy Once, Cry Once".
One KILLER amp
A true single ended Class A design, but with parallel 6v6's for a loud 15 watts, and switchable down to 7 watts. If you've never played a Class A amp with those 2nd and 4th order harmonics intact, you MUST play this. The cleans are clear and full, the crunch is there in spades, and pushed it overdrives in amazing fashion. Joe Walsh helped in the development of this amp, and he said… read more it captures the Funk 49 tone perfectly, and can do so at stage volume (in addition to great at home volume). I own 3 Dr. Z's and this is the most unique and fun to play and gig with. And these are 15 Dr Z watts - it can get loud.
Sounds great and looks great
It appears I am the first to write a review of this amp. Back story- I've always wanted a Z, but only had the opportunity to try both models of the Mac 18 and 38. And only in a music store. And I expected to be blown away, but I wasn't. I've have 3 Fender amps now, most recently the '68 Princeton Reverb, which is a great amp. So I happened across the Z-Plus, went into the rabbit… read more hole reading and watching reviews on YouTube. And the more I researched, the more I was intrigued, enough to pull the trigger and buy a used one on-line ( a very good deal). I've had it for a few weeks now and here is my take: the clean is very musical, almost hi-fi as the specs claim. Very large sounding amp for a combo; 15 watts and plenty loud but the controls are very reactive. I found it best to dial in based on my ears, rather than dial position . That helped dial in my tone. Also, the foot switch pushes the amp outside of the tone stack, which is nice. The gain is achieved with the vol and master volume. I always use pedal in the front, and amp takes pedals very well.I'm not blown away with the amp, but I haven't had a chance to gig with it. I'll update after a gig.
