Great Lead Bridge Pickup

I have a pair of Gravity Storms in my 2018 Gibson SG Standard. They replaced the Gibson 61 pickups. I wrote a separate review about the neck pickup. The bridge pickup has a very high mid-range output...perfect for lead riffs and cutting through the mix...the alnico 5 magnets give it a rich all around tone like a Gibson 498T but more refined and harmonically rich in the lows, mids,… read more and highs. The reason for 4.5 instead of 5 stars is because this pickup is really best for lead playing in my opinion...not as versatile as some others due to the cranked mids...but it could still work well for most applications.

GRAIL ACQUIRED.

After 30 years of playing, I've finally found it. After trying a truckload of Duncans (good pickups), a handful of Gibsons (also very good), and one EMG (no comment) I'm completely satisfied with my tone for the first time in my life. The Fast Track 2 sounded fantastic in my Strat paired with FS-1's in the middle and neck. Then came the HSS- Tone Zone in the bridge, FS-1 middle, and Chopper in the neck. Same setup in the newest HSS but with the Gravity Storm in the bridge, and yup, MAGIC happened. If you like the Tone Zone but want something even warmer and smoother, look no further! Slightly lower gain than the Tone Zone with amazing dynamics. The Gravity Storm Pairs really well with the Chopper in the neck. As always, Sweetwater's customer service is second to none. Win!

Amazing sounding pickup!

I did my research before choosing a pickup. I play an Ibanez Prestige RG2570 with a Basswood body and a Rosewood neck that came with the original Dimarzio/IBZ pickups. My amp is a solid state Gallien Krueger 2100SEL 100x2 stereo amp. If you are an Iron Maiden fan than listen to 'Somewhere in Time" and that is the exact sound I have. I also run a Yamaha Magic Stomp pedal for delay… read more and then into a MXR 10 band EQ with a volume and gain level in the effects loop of the amp. I like to push the mids in my sound and the stock pickups lacked tightness, clarity and dynamics. For me Ibanez and Dimarzio have always been the best combination for metal and fast playing/shredding. So I used the Dimarzio website to use their pickup selector. For every selection they have, the Gravity Storm came up 90% of the time. I am a big Steve Vai fan also and I love his lead tone. I bought the pickups, neck and bridge and installed them. I have direct mounted style factory pickups. Even with telling my salesman this, no options were available for direct mount or standard machine screw/spring set up. You HAVE TO drill the pickup mounting holes because Ibanez uses a shouldered screw that is larger than the threaded hole for the machine screw. If you don't realize this you will strip out the wood and have to fix it.Tone wise, the pickup was a night and day difference from stock. The mids are fatter, the dynamics are present and brighter, the clarity is amazing and tight and the volume is just slightly hotter. Everything I wanted in a distortion channel pickup is here and more. From playing chords to leads, the pickup responds with zero weak spots. The chords are not over distorted, they sound and sing naturally. The leads are smooth and transparent, not thin or nasally. This is a pickup with more mids to it but that was what I was looking for. The sound is more prevalent because of this and to me that makes a better sounding pickup. The only drawback of the pickup is the clean channel on the bridge pickup is slightly too bright. But I can work with that. I didn't buy this primarily for clean playing. This pickup delivered for distorted playing everything I was hoping and looking for. It leaves virtually nothing for me to look for in trying another pickup. I haven't had to change any of my amps settings, only adjust the eq pedal, which I have done slightly with the mids and lows. If anything I have upped them and the pickup is only sounding better. Also, the F spaced pickup is the only way to go in both the neck and bridge on my model Ibanez Prestige.

Amazing Pickups

I had these installed in a 1991 Ibanez RG 770 and all I can say is WOW. Nice clean channel sounds and even with a distorted amp, barre chords ring and chime with nice clarity.

Love these guys!

I am one of those people who believe that our sound is in our heads and then our fingers make it happen. Some pick ups make it easier to get the sound that we hear in our heads. that would be the gravity Storms. I had Evos in my JEM and then a Cruch Lab later in the neck position. I could get my sound with some tweaking. Then I tried a set of the Gravity Storms and they just blew… read more me away. they were just so responsive! Simply effortless to go from what I hear to making it happen. Don't get me wrong...I like the Evos and crunch Lab and would still use them had I not tried these guys. Our sound engineer noticed the difference right away and this was under less than deal conditions. he said "It was like you were channeling someone. What ever sound you wanted just happened and every little nuance just jumped right out." he is a guitar player and will no doubt own the second set of gravity Storms in town.
