Striking visual impact for your audience
Here's the rub with myself as a live player: I am hard on my strings and must replace a set every show. Guitar strings, batteries, fog juice, etc. - These are expenses to run a business. DR neon strings will lose their coating (at least they did for me in the picking area) after 1 show and in the fretting area after that if you choose not to change them. Per expenses I will… read more then buy a brand new set for the next show. The point here is the strings look amazing under lights. They are an effect and I have received many compliments about how cool they look. The coating feels fine to me; actually better than Elixir and their tone is just as good as any electric string I've used brand new.
Inconsistent, sounds dead, coating flakes off. Does not live up to their sales pitch
I've been using DR on and off for a few years. When they are on, they're awesome. Unfortunately consistency isn't something they can deliver. This is especially true with the Neons. While they tout on their website "sounds just as good, if not better than uncoated strings" what they deliver is woefully short. The lower set of strings sound like they've been dead for months, and… read more the high E is already flaking after 20 minutes of playing; another failed statement. Do they look cool? Without a doubt, absolutely! Sound and product consistency: they fall very short of the mark. For some reason the yellows are with the "better" parameters, although with just about every other color; their only consistency is that they are the exact opposite of what they advertise. DR needs to work on their quality control. As with anything else, don't make a statement you can't live up to.
