Replacement Pickups for Les Paul
I purchased a Sweetwater exclusive 60's Les Paul Lemon Burst and was not 100% happy with the stock pickups. I purchased the Dimarzio PAF 59's and swapped out the stock pickups with the 59's. It's astonishing how much different and in my opinion better it sounds. I was looking for that airy sound and the Dimarzio's have some of that. I also had a local luthier do a proper set… read more up on it and he got the strings down low with no buzz. It's just a remarkably different guitar now. If I purchase another Les Paul I'm going to swap out the pickups again. It's simply a easy way to upgrade what's already a great guitar. The only guitars I have that I don't need to change the pickups on are my EVH Wolfgang Special Sassafras (purchased from Guitar Center before I was aware of Sweetwater) and EVH Frankie Relic a recent Sweetwater purchase.
Compared to other PAF pickups. They’re one of the better ones.
I've tried Mojotone, Seymour Duncan, Throwbak, Gibson PAF style pickups, and by far I liked these the best. Not to say the others I've tried aren't good.. but they all lack the wooly open sound that I think of when I hear PAF pickups. Honestly, I've never played a real PAF.. but from what I've heard in YouTube videos, I'd say these come closest. Now, I know YouTube compresses sound,… read more but I would argue that this is what I hear when I use these. The only pickup that came close in my opinion is the Mojotone PAF 59 clone. I highly recommend these pickups. If you have a drive or Boost pedal you can go from crunch to heavy metal. The clean tones are great. It'll clean up a muddy neck pickup as well. They add a lot of articulation. These are probably an underrated pickup. I used to prefer most brands to Dimarzio, but these have hella changed my mind.
Had a set
Had Dimarzio Paf Master set. They dont sound vintage-y and are very trebley. My Les don't sound like it should be. Changed them to Paf 59 and wow. Its like I got a new guitar. Raw vintage, warm but articulate and the mids is sweet. They scream like a real Paf should and best of all they are not pricey like other boutique pup . They sound airey cuz they are not potted. My 2 cents… read more is that they sound like antique SD al2 slash - if there is such a thing.
