Best of Both Worlds
I put a set of these (bridge and neck) into a guitar that I loved the feel of acoustically and hated the pickups. It's an odd guitar with a not quite P90 custom pickup route. With some Stew-Mac trim rings they worked great. Tone wise these things go right into single coil territory with brightness but they don't get brittle like because they have a great bottom end as well. I think… read more DiMarzio nailed this one. Seems I can get exactly the tone I want with plenty of gain. It's more like a hot PAF that never goes dark and isn't too middy. Absolutely kills pulling off that single coil twang at the same time as doing a Les Paul type gain. Really articulate with high gain leads as well. Works wonderfully with pedals. I'm going to dump my Strats after this they seem anemic and brittle (not to say this does "that" SRV or Hendrix tone - but guys that like that will love this pickup set). Really you get a great twangy attack and then a humbucker type sustain. Perfect.
