Paul Gilbert's mini monster
I bought this Damazio PG-13 mini humbucker to replace my Seymore Duncan sm-3b Seymourized mini humbucker at the neck of my Epiphone Alleykat, yes an Alleykat semi hollow body with full humbucker at bridge(if you find one buy it and modify it, they're awsome!). The PG-13 has a ceramic magnet with 9.7 k, compared to the sm-3b with Alnico 5 magnet at 6.6 k, both at neck positions.I… read more wanted a beefier neck from a mini, that's why the up grade. I also needed to balance out with the bridge Duncan sh-4 full humbucker, which is at 16.6k. After installation, the Damazio goes very well with the Duncan, its definitely more beefier than the Duncan mini, very aggressive and sharp sounding. I find that mini humbuckers sound much better when really over driven but not fully distorted, and loud. The Damazio is a great rock bucker and has that Fire bird sound. My Alleykat really made me appreciate a mini at the neck, this mini humbucker neck/ full humbucker bridge is rare. Paul Gilbert says that his PG-13 mini's at neck and bridge can play anything without sounding weak. I believe Paul can make even the cheapest guitar sound great with his magic fingers. However, I'm playing jazz now using the Alleykat bridge pickup. The Damazio doesn't quite do jazz well? Maybe it's my amp or technique. I do miss some warmth from the Duncan mini that is lacking in the Damazio. That why the 4.5 rating. By the why, I used the cheater why of installing, as you know, working with a semi hollow body is very tricky for the amateur. For those of you interested in matching the wiring color scheme, here it is:sd= black to dmz= red Sd=white to dmz black, sd=red to dmz white, sd= green to dmz green. Overall, I love the Damazio PG-13 neck, no going back. Anyone wants to buy my sm- 3b mini?
