Update...
In my previous review I had an issue with this pickup and the high notes 'disappearing' when using higher gain and chording. I have since learned that was due to the electronics in my guitar simply being crap-tastic. Now that I have rectified that, let's try this again! Fantastic clarity! A little more 'polite' than one might think a higher output humbucker would be. Enough… read more mids that it can be a bit honky unless you EQ them back a bit. Overall a fantastic, smoother Petrucci voicing.
Big and rich...
Would you like a fat, bold and expressive humbucker for your lighter weight/brighter guitar? Would you like plenty of controllable power and a well sculpted bottom end? Look no further! Excellent attack, cleans up decently. Not the greatest high end string separation (if you've had issues with your high strings not being as loud or audibly 'disappearing' under gain you'll know… read more what I'm talking about), but FAR from the worst. Overall a great pickup that's really flow under the radar for some reason.
No title
As a player of 30 yrs and a small time custom guitar builder, I've tried a lot of pickups. The list is probably less of what i haven't tried vs what I have. And quite honestly Dimarzio pretty much describes this pickup very accurately on their website. It's definitely thicker sounding, but very clear. Not muddy at all. Yeah, there's some extra hefty down there, but it's very focused.… read more High end is just about right for my tastes. EQ charts tend to feel misleading at times and Dimarzio has it at "4" for treble. I guess I can see how they say it's got a smoother high end, but it's not lacking or ever dark sounding. Saw the other reviewer mention the Tone Zone and while I love the tone Zone in the right guitars, this does not remind me of a tweaked or newer Tone Zone. Perhaps there is some lineage there, but the end result is the Sonic Ecstasy is punchier and clearer. By a fairly large margin. The TZ still reigns with the overtones and harmonics and smooth mid push. This has some of these mid smoothness, but it's much more immediate in feel. Hard to justify the price tag, essentially adding $... for a custom cover, but the design is pretty cool and looks good. They'd sell a bunch more with a coverless version
Big Fat Sweet and Clear
I was looking for a replacement for the Shawbucker in my Elite Strat. I was happy with the sound, but the unwanted feedback at volume from that pickup was unacceptable. Having great experiences with the Crunch Lab and the Illuminator, I thought I'd give the Sonic Ecstasy a try. Yowza!!! Talk about FAT! And clear too. Very very impressed with these. I like what these (and the Crunch… read more Lab and Illuminator) do to the high end. It's addicting. It let's you dial in more highs on the amp and always stays big & fat, even soloing well beyond the 12th fret. Not exactly "Strat-like" but for me, the only way to go when wanting a big, fat, sweet yet exceptionally clear tone with a high gain amp. These will not disappoint. Only caution. . . . Make sure they'll fit. It's a beautiful but big cover, and I had to take a Dremel to the pick guard on my Strat to get it in. A little extra time, but well worth it.
Dimarzio Sonic Ecstasy bridge
Wow! Is an understatement! I"ve used Petrucci designed DiMarzio"s in the past and like with those they do not disappoint! I Recently bought an Ibanez Jem77WDP. This Jem unlike the others has a mahogany body with rosewood top. This model came with the DiMarzio Dark matter 2 bridge and neck pick ups. In my opinion the lower output and eq just didn"t work for me. The sonic ecstasy… read more is big and full! It"s even better than I thought or hoped! It brought so much life and dynamics to sound! Incredible seperation, full rich cleans and just warm as hell distorted tones, normal gain and high gain are so alive. I"m running this through a Carvin Legacy 3 with an eventide H9. Life is good!
