If you pick the guitar strings at the bridge and move towards the neck you will notice a vast difference in tonation. This is the basis for pickup placement on any fretted instrument. From thin and crisp to fat and mellow, this is the tonal range of the guitar. Thus build a better single coil. Seymour duncan has done just that. From the days of the old blues men who used what was available, to the les paul grasping tone that was lot cleaner and louder. The SP90-1b gives you the proper tonal placement with the output you'd expect from a humbucker!
