The Taylor Jason Mraz Signature - Just Amazing!!

My long search for the perfect guitar that will fit my and my wife needs and likes has finally ended with the Taylor Jason Mraz Signature beauty. After owning many great guitars including Taylor, Martin, Gibson ES335, PRS Neal Schon Signature model and several Luthier made classical guitars was still looking for an all around acoustic electric guitar with a cutaway which worked read more for Popular, Brazilian, Spanish Flamenco and Classical music all in one so when we travel I did not have to haul several guitars. This guitar fits the bill perfectly for me, one of those guitars that you pick up and can"t put down, and did not want to put it back on the wall for fear someone else would play it and buy it!! It sounds so full, with an amazing warm, round and balanced sound across the full register, from its surprising low end to its mellow and pleasant and non piercing highs. Great well defined and rich lows (non muddy) without needing to have a super large body. Right from the moment I picked it up from the wall at the store it played so easily and effortlessly, this guitar just sings, so well set up from the factory where I will not let anyone mess with its original set up as they will most likely disrupt its perfect setup in trying to make it better. No need at all, it has a wonderful low action that allows very easy, comfortable, fast and responsive articulation for finger picking styles. I looked a several Cordoba models including the GK Pro Negra and C12, wonderful guitars but these are mailnly taylored to either Flamenco or Classical only styles and they are great guitars for that. I needed a versatile guitar for me to play all styles and for my wife to play pop songs and this guitar is just perfect. We can travel with only one guitar. I very highly recommend this axe to anyone looking for a mellow, warm, responsive, a dream to play and gorgeous looking guitar. Clearly Jason Mraz did his homework when creating his signature guitar after the award winning Taylor NS72CE while adding the Zodiac the signs in Koa on the Rosette, beautiful artwork and his "Be Love" motto. I feel very lucky to have found one of them!

Not what I was hoping for...

I'll begin by saying I am a big fan of Jason Mraz's music and part of his sound that I really like is his nylon string guitar, which this model has been replicated on, with some embellishments. My first impression upon receiving this instrument appearance wise was that - this is a gorgeous guitar. The finish work is really well done. However, upon playing it I quickly discovered read more some flaws, which surprised me. The acoustic tone overall was just average, without much projection. To my further disappointment I found that the setup was substandard. I experienced buzzing on the D string from the 5th thru 9th frets and on the A string in the same area but in a narrower range. I took the guitar to my local luthier and he determined that there was a raised area where the fretboard meets the body, which was the cause of the buzzing. There is a truss rod adjustment which could have taken this out but the nut was already at the end of it's throw, so no adjustment was possible. I was not all that impressed either by the amplified sound of this guitar. It has an undersaddle piezo pickup which does duckishly quack enough to notice, it sounds ok, but definitely not great. For the type of pickup though, it might sound good with a Fishman Aura, but for nearly 3 grand, it should not require that kind of processing. I ended up exchanging the first guitar for another to see if I could have possibly gotten a dud but the second one was the same in every respect. To Sweetwater's credit, my rep Anthony Longano, was very helpful throughout this process and my original purchase amount was refunded to me without issue upon sending the second guitar back. I did call Taylor support to relay my experience, but did not get the impression that I was being taken seriously. Who knows, maybe they have adjusted their production process to give more attention to proper setup before these guitars leave the factory, so your mileage may vary. Sweetwater's return policy makes buying decisions easier for cases such as these.
