Went from flatwound chrome d'addarios (for jazz) to these and couldn't be happier. both great strings but these are bouncier and better for rock and jamband sounds.

Got these for my 1993/4 MIM P-bass equipped with a Hipshot A-style bridge and American-made Fender pickups. These strings are near perfect for this bass setup as the sound is a bit bolder, bit more growl. This is my first use of flatwounds and I find them very comfortable to slide and bend. Pretty sure these will be a permanent string selection for this bass in years to come.

Quality Control Issues?

I was pretty excited to put these strings on my P Bass, as I wanted to get that flatwound feel and thump and I know Ernie Ball typically makes great stuff!I've been playing guitar/bass for over a decade and am well versed in replacing strings and basic to moderate maintenance work, so I was pretty surprised when the first new string I put on (happened to be the D string) broke as read more I was tightening it up to pitch.I got in touch with Sweetwater who were gracious enough to put in a ticket with tech support, and eventually replace the set of strings. Here's the kicker though, as I opened the second set and began restringing the bass, the G string snapped as it was being tuned up to pitch. Again, I have a lot of experience restringing instruments, but even still, I started questioning myself and did some googling. Apparently this is a common issue with these strings, which may be due to the way they are wound--I found a forum on TalkBass where others had the same problem with strings breaking as they were being put on the bass for the first time.Between the two sets, I was able to get the bass fully strung. Right now, the strings are SUPER bright and sound almost like rounds, so I'm hoping they will dull out as they break in, to get more of that classic flatwound thump. Honestly, I wish I also would have read the description on these puppies a little more thoroughly, as they are made to be super bright for flats. All in all, if you're looking for a round wound sound with the feel of flats, this could be a good option, however for almost $... I don't think they're worth the risk of breaking before you even get started, especially considering that both packs I got had a string break before I even got playing.

You can call it unnecessary to leave a review for strings, but let me tell you these strings are extremely durable. I am writing this in September and I put these on my bass last December. They still sound bright and full. Definitely recommend these strings for flatwound players, especially for fretless basses like mine.
