Nice but ...
I like this guitar a lot. When I purchased it I asked Sweetwater to put 12s on it and adjust the action and intonation to fit the heavier gauge. The tech did a really good job and I was pleased and have enjoyed it in the four months I have had it. It stays in tune and plays really well all over the fretboard. I can get some sweet sounds out of either or both pickups. But I would… read more give it a higher rating were it not for the flaw described in the next paragraphs. The input jack is held in place by a nut and washer combo. The nut fell off one day after about 4 months and the input jack fell into the body of the guitar. I couldn't get it out. I contacted D'Angelico to see if they would fix it but they told me it was my problem even though the instrument is under warranty. We were finally able to fish it out and refasten it after a lot of effort using several different tools and some light gauge wire. The input jack should be screwed to the inside of the body. Maybe one day I will disassemble the instrument and find a way to do that myself. But in the meantime I will try to remember to check that the nut is still tight each time I plug or unplug the guitar. It's a nice instrument otherwise, but I wouldn't take it on stage because that would be far too risky - there is no way to recover quickly if the input jack falls through again.
Wish I could give this more than 5 stars!
I was looking for a hollow or semi hollow guitar to provide the sounds and textures my trusty Tele can't quite deliver. I found the perfect fit with the Excel SS. It's design is exquisite and the build and finish are first rate. The attention to detail is as good as I have seen on any guitar regardless of price. It's got wonderful playability and feel of the neck and fretboard.… read more Independent coil tapping for the two super sounding, very quiet, pickups delivers the sounds I was looking for and then some. My go to Sweetwater guy,Alan Carter, helped walk me through my final selections the guitar and had it in my hands within two days. Thanks Alan!
