Ibanez Premium SR5FMDX 5-string - Emerald Green Low Gloss Review

Fantastic Bass

I have been a fan and user of Ibanez basses since the mid 80s. Still playing my Blazer and RoadstarII models, I decided 2 years ago to add an SR2600 four string to my collection. I purchased from Sweetwater and received the bass about 4-5 weeks later as it was… read more not in stock. I ordered the mbc300 case with it as well and they shipped the bass to me in its case. The bass played very good right out of the case. Action is just about perfect with very minimal fret buzz, the strings were fresh and bright sounding and the fit and finish is outstanding. Sonically, the Nordstrand Big Break pickups paired with the Ibanez active eq are super versatile. I found the sound demos of this bass (and others) online to be weak and thin...not the case when plugged into my rig and even a small practice amp. You can dial it in for a variety of great tones from hard rock to bright funk/slap. The neck is fairly thin and narrow (for a 5 string) but took some getting used to coming from the SR2600. Playability is excellent. Fret edges are nice and smooth and the neck has a nice feel to it. The Emerald green inlays are a nice touch as well. The bridge set up has the capability to alter the string spacing if so desired. Overall I am very pleased with this bass. The SR basses have a nice feel to them and this one is no different. The only con I have is that I believe they should include the road case at this price point. The supplied bag is ok but I prefer to keep my basses in a case.
