Good Bass But Bad Pickups

Hou Kin Ying

This is a good bass overall, nice design, high specs compare to others and it is well made, the only down side is the pickups, I think Ibanez made a wrong decision when choosing the pickups for this bass, those Barts sounded too dark and not punchy at all, so I will replace those pickups. If you're looking for a bass for metal, this won't be a good choice because the sound will read more disappoint you. If you're willing to mod this bass, do it, there's nothing to complain except for those pickups.

Let me start out by saying this bass is a very nice instrument. Not only does it have good looks, but it also has an amazing sound to it. When I first looked at this bass I was a little concerned about the width of the neck because it is one of the widest necks that I have found (at least for a 5 string), and even though my fingers are short I found out that the width of the neck read more is not as much of a deal breaker as finding the correct string spacing. You see, this bass's string spacing is 19 mm which is the same as most 4 string basses. Most (not all)5 string basses, including the Ibanez SR series, is spaced at 16 mm. That amounts to about 1/8 of an inch for every string. When I was playing my Ibanez SR series 5 string I felt like I was always fumbling my way across the strings, but now with this bass I feel right at home. To me, having the correct string spacing is more important than having a narrower neck. Just another note: Ibanez will typically give you more features for the same or less money than many other bass manufactures. Do yourself a favor and compare.
