Needed a fretted bass for an album which called for that sound and accuracy, so I got one of these. I didn't hesitate. I own two Lakland fretless models. I knew the evenness and quality would be there. It's on the CD now. The engineer and artist loved it. "Factory Town" by Greg Bikowski. Love this baby. It'll perform with any $4000 bass.
Great bass
I bought this as my first bass to own after playing guitar 15+ years. The quality on mine is very good and the spalted wood gives it just enough to look at without being too fancy. The on board pre-amp is really nice and I find myself running the treble just below center and the bass slightly above. This bass gets deep if you want it to and still maintains punch. All the strings… read more are very even when it comes to volume. This is the first instrument I've owned that had been plecked (comes standard with Lakland from what I've read) and makes the intonation great. I would'nt hesitate to buy one of these. My friend enjoyed it so much that he upgraded to the 4 string version of this from his current bass. Thanks again Sweetwater.
Can I give it 6+ stars
After trying a G&L L-2500 that I wasn't in love with, and an Ibanez 1345B (which had a low B that didn't sound right, and then the active electronics died) I have finally found a 5 string bass that is a definte keeper. I had to wait for Sweetwater to get this one in stock, and when they came in I regretfully did not pull the trigger right away on one that I liked--with natural woodgrain… read more looks (my favorite) I want one that is asthetically pleasing. The happy ending here is that one came on the website the next day that looked even better so I immeidately placed my order that evening. The order was confirmed the next moring, and arrived the day after that--about 36 hours after ordering--amazing. While I tried to make myself like the other 2 basses, that was not necessary at all with the Lakland. Not to mention, it costs less than the Ibanez 1345B and, comes plekked! What the what!! One thing I did like about the 1345B was the Norstrand big singles. Tone wise, I wasn't sure if the barts would deliver like the Nordstrands. Now that I've been playing it more, guess what? They can and they do. As far as the low B, it has a sound consistent with the other strings, and sounds good all the way up to the 22nd fret. The others, did not. The only drawback for some might be, it is heavy. I do prefer heavier, substantial basses but that said, I am not a hard gigging, professional musician thus cannot comment on how it might feel over a few+ hour set, but it is something worth considering for some people. Overall, I absolutely do love this bass: the asthetics, the feel, the finish, the tones, the playability and the value for the cost are all excellent, IMO. Thanks to Sweetwater for a great return and warranty policy that allowed my to finally find a keeper 5 string bass.
Skyline 55-01 - Spalted Maple
Been waiting to get my spalted maple for almost a year. Absolutely flawless finish, action and play- ability. Who ever set this up must have pyschic abilities and could read my mind. I play a mixture of standard finger plucking, slap and pop.I am a die hard fender american 5 stringer. I tried to still say the the fender was my top dog, but my 55-01 is killer also. The sleek neck… read more and smooth feel is addictive. Of course the unique look and finish of the spalted maple pattern sculpting make this seem like I paid thousands of dollars for this baby. Once I do my custom preamp eq upgrade this will be my main gigging axe. My interchangeable black, white pearloid and clear pick guards make this baby almost look like a hot smoking babe, almost LOL !!!. Of course it sounds great.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing Bass
I have owned this bass for 4 years now. This is by far the best bass in this price range. I play bass and electric guitar at several different churches, and everywhere I play this bass I get tons of compliments on the quality of sound. It has excellent sustain, punch , and a thick bottom end. This is a real workhorse of a bass
