Great Amp
I got the Maz 18 head about a year ago and it is my first endeavor into the Dr. Z world. I play in bands that cover everything from bluegrass to country to classic rock and beyond. I have many other amps from various companies but have always been very inspired by other artists who use Z stuff. I though that the Maz would be a good jumping off point as it is simple yet has great… read more features like the master volume, cut, and effects loop. This amp can do almost anything. Put a compressor in front of it and you have nice, popping, chicken picking sounds. Crank the volume to get into the classic rock, edge of distortion world. Add a boost or overdrive and you can really push it over the edge and using the EQ bypass switch really makes it scream. I am using primarily with the UA Ox box which lets me tailor the sound even further to the genre and feel. I have also used through a Celestion vintage 30 which sounds great and a Jensen C12Q. No matter what cab it always has a unique, even tone. This amp really has a quality overdrive sound when pushed and has a good balance between percussive and dynamic. The cut control is very helpful when cranked up loud and the master volume is not overly responsive. I have no complaints about the effects loop which doesn't seem to cause any tone suck. I primarily play with a Tele which is great and with a quick EQ tweak a Les Paul sounds awesome too. Great amp and shout out to Ed Nystrom who always points me in the right direction.
Dr z tone!!
So i have had this amp for a while now. I wanted to really use it before i speak about it. If i could give this amp 10 stars i would, first off, i wanted a small stack for recording and small venue. So i did my research. This amp not only has an amazing sound, it has a feel to it that wont let you stop playing. Bottom line i am so happy with my purchase, its loud and no matter how… read more much i turn all the dials I cannot get this amp to sound bad. My favorite sound is a strat on it, but the tele rocks that amp. This amp is its own beast however. In my opinion it does fender cleans better than fender. It does vox crunch better than vox, And marshall drive better than marshall. Im glad i bought the maz 18nr. It is the perfect fit for my studio. I have played it more than all my other amps combined. I will definitely be buying more dr z stuff in the future.
