Review for Fender Supersonic 22 watt head
I recently ordered a Fender Supersonic 22 watt head from Sweetwater. It is an excellent sounding amp, very comparable to the 68' custom reverb deluxe in its clean tone. The second channel or 'burn' channel as it's called has surprisingly good gain options. Good enough that I was able to remove an overdrive pedal from my board. The amp came with a broken footswitch that Nathanial… read more Walker was able to sort out for me. He reached out to Fender to replace and when Fender replied that it would be a few months to get one he went ahead and took a new footswitch out of a different Supersonic head and shipped it out. When it arrived it had obviously been tested at Sweetwater to insure it functioned properly. I really appreciate all the effort on my behalf. I would also like to thank Skyler McGlothlin who has been a great help with all my purchases. After ordering gear from amazon and getting very poor and confused customer service it has been a pleasure having Sweetwater fill my gear needs. Thanks!
Excellent lap steel guitar amp!
Like another reviewer stated somewhere, I was watching some demos on the Super Champ head, and reading online, and was intrigued by that amp's "Super Sonic" setting. Most amps have way too much treble that you can't dial out for a sweet lap steel guitar tone. After researching & watching demos on the actual Super Sonic, I was sold on it. Admittedly, my first purchase was a Katana… read more Artist MkII for the access to all the onboard effects and lower price tag, but it was sent back immediately. The Katana was the most shrill, extreme treble amp I've heard so far.I then ordered the one I really wanted, the Super Sonic head, and I love it! It arrived damaged, but after trying it out for 2 or 3 hours, there was no way I was sending it back. I only dinged a half a star because mine arrived with the face/tweed front board broken loose and flopping around in the carton. This is not any fault of Sweetwater, but Fender, thinking press board will hold a wood screw from the back with maybe 1/8" thread engagement at best. ...I'd expect Fender would have a better solution. This amp has such a wide range, and very responsive tone shaping on the "Burn" channel. I use the "Vintage" side as well, but only with the "Fat" switch engaged for a fat round tone. It was nice to get an amp with the footswitch, cover, and cables supplied as well.
Biting, Stinging and Bell Tone Ringing
I played around with the 12th and 13th channel on a Fender Super Champ X2 I bought new here. I became very intrigued by what I was hearing on the Super Sonic channel so I bought the real thing. It is awesome. A full sized reverb tank is what makes the booger so long (24 inches). It sounds great with humbuckers, S-Style and T-style guitars. It's my first real Fender amp and I am… read more very pleased. The clean is amazing and the dirty channel is super flexible. My only other amps have been all Morgans and this thing is not out of place with them at all. She's a keeper!
Great Hot Rodded Fender Tone
My review is always based on the price of the amp. At $999, this amp offers a great boutique style sound and feel. Very warm, dynamic, smooth, tons of gain, lots of tonal variation, and dynamics. The clean is standard Fender awesome, very Deluxe Reverb sounding. Crank it up for great traditional 6V6 tone. The Burn channel is something else. It has a very Mesa Mark 1 type of drive,… read more but with less of the Mesa Midrange and much clearer sounding. There is a difference between the Drive 1 and 2 controls. Drive 1 is bright high gain, Drive 2 is lower gain and voiced much darker. Between both of those controls you can get a WIDE variety of overdrive tones and feel. Reverb, as always, is Fender-tastic. Boingy and deep. The head is also fairly light weight. . This is a great amp if you play blues and fusion. Hard rock to metal....but not in the Marshall catagory. I use a 4x12 cab loaded with Eminence Red White Blues speakers, which are kind of like low powered, darker, EV sounding speaker. Very full, laid back mids, and tight low end.
