What took Fender so long?

The original trem on my Classic Player Jazzmaster was totally unsatisfactory – clunky with very little travel or ability to shift the pitch by more than a ½ tone without using a lot of force. I swapped in this new Panorama tremolo and it was like night and day. The Panorama is quiet and smooth, and capable of dropping the low E all the way down to C#, and then returning to read more perfect tune. Wow! I'm not yet sure about Panorama's trem arm which is of the pop-in variety. How freely the trem arm swings is controlled by tightening or loosening a hex nut that sits under the cover plate – so if you want to adjust it you have to unscrew and remove the entire trem tailpiece assembly, which could be a nuisance depending on how often adjustment is needed. It also takes a really strong effort to pull out the trem arm out of its socket for storage. I prefer the old screw-in type arm which doesn't have these problems but my complaints are minor compared to the huge amount of functionality added by the Panorama unit.
