Pure Blues is Pure Greatness!
I first tried these out on my "practice bass" (Ibanez TMB100) and they are a wonderful improvement! If they sound that good on a cheap bass, I am imagining how they will sound on my show basses. Love that bluesy type sound that is clear and crisp! This is the first set of DR strings have installed and I am sold on them! You cannot beat the "Handmade" quality! Planning using… read more DR strings on my other basses! Now which ones to pick?!
Sing on a J-Bass!
These strings just really do it all. Especially on a J-Bass they bring a boost of extra mids, which really rounds out the sound. So you can mute and have a nice thick old school tone, or kick in that scooped EQ and funk out. I also regularly go past the 12th fret and the highs are extremely well-rounded and musical. I didn't even touch my EQ the first weeks of owning these, since… read more all the tone I needed was there. They also age very well, so you can bump the tone or high-mids as the strings age and still have a bright slap sound if you want. You won't have to chuck these after two weeks if you like bright tones. For me they have the ideal tone and flexibility to play all kinds of styles. My only very slight annoyance is that they gripped my picks more than other strings fresh out the pack. It feels a little weird, but it fades quickly and didn't really affect my playing.
Best round wound bass strings
I have tried three different gauges of the DR Pure Blues and finally settled on the mediums because I love the sound of the low E. Very big sounding. I have also tried the Lo-Riders but those tend to sound too "thumpy" on my P-bass. The Pure Blues have a smoother attack and a crunchy growl. They're also brighter than the Lo-Riders which gives me a better presence in the mix. These… read more have become my favorite round wounds.
Lively but Balanced
I was using D'Addario Chromes and got good results, but I just put a fresh set of these DR's on my passive P Bass with EMG pickups and was very impressed with the great tone right out of the box. It really brought my bass alive. They have a balanced and lively tone throughout the lows, mids and highs. The harmonics ring out with out being harsh or too bright like other DR steel… read more strings. I am super impressed and happy so far - cant wait to hear how they sound in the band mix and in recording. I would highly recommend these strings for any style.
Great Bass Strings
Bass strings are such a huge part of what you hear out of a bass. I have used DR for years, but over the last few I have varied the type of DRs and depending on the bass am using Roto Swing 66, and an occasional GHS Boomer. I had a set of DR Sunbeans on this beautiful 19801 Morris P J I have and found them a bit "twangy". I read about the Pure Blues and figured I would give them… read more a shot. Wow, I love these strings. Precise tones, great sustain, awesome lowes with warm somewhat muted mids and focused highs. These could be the new go to.
