Red dirty secret
Very easy to get the sound you want. The improvements made throughout this pedal are very good. Marshall in a pedal. I would buy it again. Very nice.
Catalinbread DLS RED
I was a little apprehensive at the prospect of Catalinbread messing with one of Howard Gee's original designs. I also thought the original DLS mkIII sounded a little dark for my taste, and the RED was supposed to be a bit brighter so I thought I would give it a try. The RED rocks! It is "that" tone. It sounds like I am playing through a Marshall. Seriously. Roll the gain back for… read more a subtle, crispy overdrive; crank the gain pounding distortion that works well for the tones of GNR, Metallica, Foo Fighters. Very usable tones.
Vintage Marshall in a Box
I have a ZVEX Distortron that does a very nice vintage Marshall emulation. It has been my go to for these types of tones. I had always been curious about the DLS as an alternative. Once I saw the red edition and the lower sale price, I had to jump in. My plan is to use the DLS as it was intended: for vintage Marshall tone from a non-Marshall amp (in my case a Tone King Falcon… read more Grande). I would say the DLS and ZVEX sound very similar. Both cop very convincing vintage Marshall tones and both respond well to dynamics and clean up well. The DLS has more flexible 3 band EQ rather than the three-way mini-toggle on the ZVEX. It is also more quiet than the Distortron. For the intended use, to put a vintage Marshall at my disposal at the stomp of a footswitch, this pedal rocks. Authentic tone and feel with great definition and clarity without harshness. Also very dynamic to touch and volume knob changes, just like a proper vintage Marshall. The build quality and aesthetics are outstanding. It also looks great in the red finish. Highly recommended.
