A Fuzz Tweaker's Delight
This tank arrived earlier this afternoon and - holy moly - it RULES! The Hi Freq Boost side sounds great! As with other treble boosters, this sounds best running into a dirty amp, an overdrive pedal or the fuzz side of the Hot Fuzz. When set low, it can actually clean up and tighten up your fuzz tone. When set at max, it pummels the fuzz side and causes that amazing "broken"… read more fuzz sound. I've tended to keep it around 3:00. The fuzz side is super versatile. Keeping the dials low, I could get that warm, low-gain Fuzz Face tone I love. Leave the Juice knob all the way off, max the Bass and dial the Treble in around 3:00 and it makes an amazing light overdrive that is bright and clear and breaks up with your pick attack. I'm amazed that, at both cleaner and more intense settings, this pedal always lets the character of the particular guitar and the particular pickup shine through. I've seen some folks saying that the Hi Freq Boost side introduces a ton of noise, but I didn't have this issue. This pedal has a LOT of gain on tap - every single knob adds gain within the pedal (except, funnily, the "Gain" knob which is your master output volume). Once you start turning the dials past 3:00, one can only expect some noise given that you have introduced an ocean of delicious gain at that point. Cranking the pedal into it's most extreme setting caused a squeal when running on a 9V battery but this went away with a power supply. I'm still going to keep it on battery power because - it's a fuzz! The construction of the pedal is totally solid and the reversed input/output jacks don't bother me - Fuzz Faces are like that! I've truly never experienced a fuzz or overdrive pedal with this kind of tonal range. It can be wooly and warm, tight and focused, snarling and biting, articulate and beautiful, melting and falling apart. There are so many shades of fuzz/overdrive/boost in this thing that makes it well worth the price. As both a live and studio tool, this thing would be an amazing asset. Highly recommended!
Decent.
Enjoyed both the fuzz and treble boost, especially both at the same time. Huge eq range, lots of tones. However, some minor things I noticed that I've also noticed on other BAE stuff have to do with their QC: wobbly base, uncentered knobs, small knicks in paint, misaligned screws. These things weren't deal breakers though, I just couldn't get attached to the sound RE: what the… read more other reviewer said about white noise: it's a fuzz that's picky about power sources. I used three different types of wall/pedal power and they all introduced tons of white noise past 12-2 o'clock on the treble boost and a loud hum on the fuzz side. 9v's are quiet
The Fuzz is Hot. The Boost is Not.
The Fuzz side of this unit is a stone cold killer. Highly recommended. The Boost side of this unit is a tiny snowstorm of white noise. It's practically useless unless you want something to sound like it's coming over a telephone line. It just doesn't sound very good by itself or when combined with the Fuzz.
