Lakland 44-64

Just upgraded to this bass, and I have no bad words to say about my purchase. Great build quality, great setup and inspection, and as always, great service from Andy Rice and the Sweetwater team! Needed the flexibility of the PJ configuration with a thinner jazz style neck, and timeless good looks. This bass checks all the boxes. Ash body has rich harmonics and tone with good sustain read more and presence. Neck is solid and very fast, with eye catching inlays and solid tuners. Looked at the Fender performer with PJ pickups, but it a has a P bass style neck, which is slightly wider and chunkier. For my taste, I like a Jazz style bass neck, but with P bass tone capabilities, so this was the best solution in my price range. Shipped in the SKB case (purchased separately) and arrived in mint condition. Glad I bought it!!!

Bargain Tone for the Price

Amazing tone, great sustain, playability is astounding. The electronics are reliable. Pickups are warm and not over the top. The only complaint I have is that it does not come with a gig bag or a case. Other than that great bass.

Perfect

I just received this bass, and I love it. Its easy to play.Perfect setup. I own multiple guitars and basses, and this is the nicest to play. The frets are the perfect height. No snags. Its a great looking bass as well.It sounds great. I can't believe I waited this long to get a Lakland. Instant fan, and Sweetwater brought us together! Thanks all

Good golly do I love this bass.

I bought this bass about 8 months ago, and it quickly became the workhorse of my collection. It's nice and punchy with both pick-ups all the way off, and soloing the precision pick-up gives a fantastic classic p-bass tone (I'm playing it right now and that's what compelled me to take a pause and write this review). The build quality is as good as any American made instrument I've read more played - right there with my EBMM Stingray. The neck has the perfect finish and plays fast and smooth. The fretwork is perfect. The photos don't do it justice - the candy apple red is beautiful in person. The hipshot tuners stay in tune really well, as anyone who has used them knows. I honestly don't have a single complaint about this bass and can't say enough good things about it. It probably won't be my last Lakland purchase. Shoutout to the folks at Sweetwater who set it up perfectly before shipping as well.

Great Playing Bass Once You Fix Some Problems

Richard

I would give this bass a five rating, but there had been some problems with the bass, that shouldn't have been when I received it. The first problem was the the little round piece that holds down the D string and G String. That was not right and my tech is a luthier, so he caught it and repaired it, some of the frets were uneven, and the pickups were just plain horrible. Which I read more changed out for DiMarzio model PJ pickups. Now it sounds really good with more bottom end, along with better low mids also. Those Lakland pickups were horrible unless you're into slapping and popping constantly. Which, I'm not very much into. I also hate EMG pickups because, to me, they sound very sterile. I have never met an EMG pickup, that I've ever liked. That's why I didn't want the GB 44-64. I also had a black pick guard made for the bass, because I hate white pick guards. With that metallic blue and the black pick guard. The bass now looks and plays awesome now. This bass has one of the best necks that I've played on and with those better pickups in it. It now sounds awesome and I couldn't be happier. This is a great playing bass, once it's dialed in. But the way I received it, I almost sent it back. If it wasn't for that neck being so nice to play, I would have. But it only cost me a 125.00 bucks to get everything repaired right and I even had a bone nut installed in it. Now it's a real player and I wouldn't sell or trade it for anything now.

Lakland Skyline 44-64 Custom PJ with Ash body

I have been playing now for 35+ years and have had a lot of Bass guitars in my time from Alembic`s to Warrior and Fender and Rickenbacker. The one thing I have found is that you will never find the perfect Bass you will always want to change something. So I focus more on build quality and this bass is every bit as good as an American Fender Bass. The neck on this bass is one of read more the most comfortable I have played in a long time I like the fact that this 44-64 model has no binding on the fretboard. The Laurel Fingerboard if very much the same as Indian Rosewood in fact if you were not told it was not Rosewood you would`nt even know. The fit and finish are top notch and it fits in a Fender Deluxe case like a glove. This is a well balanced and comfortable playing Bass you wont be disappointed by the play-ability of this instrument. Now to the only real downside to this bass.( NO REAL BOTTOM END) But that does not mean this Bass does`nt sound good. I was able to get that Kansas Wayward Son sound with little to know effort at all, I was also able to get a really close resemblance to the old Rickenbacker 4001 sound but as we all know Ric`s have no bottom end either so you will have to compensate with your amps eq settings. To me that is not a deal breaker the fit ,finish and play-ability are all more important. As for tone that`s what your amp`s EQ is there for. And like I was told by a Luthier a long time ago you put a high end set of pickup`s in any guitar you can turn a $1000.00 guitar into a $1500.00 in a matter of 30 minutes. The build quality and how the instrument feels in your hands is more important. So for what it`s worth the Bass is very treble sounding but plays great I will use my EQ and in time throw in a set of high end pickups and feel comfortable knowing this Bass will alway`s feel great in my hands.

This bass is as goods as it gets, I've been Ric man for years but wanted something new and different, so pic one of these up just by the reviews. I am blown away at how nice it plays, and the tones I get are exceptional, Mine needed a little neck adjustment and I'll probably adjust it just a little more, I tried the coated roto sounds just for the heck of it. Nice, Just got out read more of the studio and the best sound on the recordings is the bass, it's noticeable. Big sound. I've been playing 50 years and I still love great tone and this covers it all

I've owned this bass for a year now. I am not a professional player but I have played for 20 years on and off. I've owned a verity of basses , but this one is tops without question. I have a Fender Jazz and Fender Precision bass I used both when I play out (mostly party's and weddings) . So I was interested in trying out a bass that would cover both. From the moment I plugged this read more bass in I knew it was something special . The pickups have great range ,they cover both those guitars and more . Tone controls are are smooth and easy to use. I love the combination of the jazz neck with the p bass body. But there is something special about the neck, its fast and feels extra light in your hands and the fret work is A+. I love the neck binding and block inlays. The Hipshot tuners are nice. I (it) get lots of compliments when I play this thing. Which nowadays is always. I guess the only downside is I haven't touched my Fenders for a year now. Sorry about the long review. (I could go on and on) Also a shout out to the folks at Sweetwater they were very helpful with the purchase. (And finding me a nice case for it) Thank you. PS: I agree with the reviewer above . What are the strings Lakland use on this bass ? And how do I get more. They play great.

Excellent Bass!

I highly recommend this bass. This is my first Lakeland, and I can tell I'll be getting more in the future.

Just as I'd hoped

Fast, thin neck, vintage style pickups with great growl, through-body stringing for great sustain. Minor quibbles are: Volume pot taper on neck pickup is the kind that gives you most of the volume in the last 1/10th of rotation, and the plastic pickup covers have extremely sharp edges which require a little rounding to be comfortable to rest one's thumb on. All in all, a great read more and affordable alternative to a vintage P bass

My first Lakland. Playing mostly fender basses I thought I would try one of these out. What I noticed right away was how nice the neck is. Nice slim, smooth and fast. Great fret work and straight as an arrow all the way to the 20th fret. Beautiful sustain unplugged from an amp. Not sure the brand of strings that come with it bu, they compliment it nicely. Played it out this read more past weekend for the first time and found it worked very well as we play a variety of styles. I think the only con was that it felt smaller than my Fender Jazz basses but that is just a matter of getting used to. Nice pickups and smooth quiet volume and tone controls. No hum or buzz when rolling back the volume on the J pickup. If the Skylines are this good then I can't wait to try a USA model.
