Transparent but tweakable

Paul C

Playing humbuckers through a Roland JC-40, Nicholas Weaver from Sweetwater recommended this and the JHS Morning Glory V4 for a transparent low to mid gain overdrive. I now own both and overall I prefer the Wessex. For me it has a more neutral sound than the MG, and it feels the most "natural"-sounding, whatever that means. Also, although the MG has a tone knob and a high cut switch, read more the availability of bass AND treble knobs on the Wessex is a real winner for tone/EQ tweakability when playing around with gain levels. Knocking off half of a star for three reasons. 1. The power jack is on the side below the input jack, which makes things somewhat cumbersome. 2. The foot switch takes a good bit of force to press. 3. If I am starting in Neutral mode, there is an unsettling "pop" sound when I switch to Enhanced mode. This seems to only happen the first time though, as I can continue switching back and forth without the "pop". My favorite part about the Wessex is that it seems to do the right amount of "more" and the right amount of "less". The EQ knobs and the E/N switch offer a lot of flexibility, but the overall character is not bossy or "sticky-outy".
