Bought the bass because I needed a black 5 string and I love my old '98 BBN5 (clear Alder). Tried out the 605 in the store and new it would work fine. I prefer 19 mm string spacing but the 605's is comfortable enough and I like the fingerboard radius and the location of the dots which work well in an orchestra pit with low light - better than center positioned dots. I used the bass read more immediately after purchase for a theatre musical. I found that the stock strings were not suitable and I got a lot of black fingertips from something on the fingerboard which did not go away after a change to different strings. Not sure about all Yamaha basses, my BBN5 was used when I bought it but this one needed some break-in and the more I play it, the better it gets. It's been about 6 months and after a show with a dozen performances, hours of practice and rehearsal and continued use at home, this girl sings. Her neck is solid and substantial but not too thick. The more I play it and the more I play it against my other basses the more I like it. Biggest drawback IMO is the passive tone control which seems to do little, very subtle, for my tone until nearly turned all the way down and then it really cuts tone. Good idea, not the best execution, here. Still, not anything to get overly concerned about for me.

Finally got the opportunity to gig this last weekend and overall, I am very pleased. Weight is fantastic, and balances well on the strap. Good, solid tone and even across all strings. Very good B string with no floppiness. My only real issue is with the treble side fret ends. From the first fret to the last, every single one is sharp. Going to take a bit of work to get this read more in comfortable playing condition. I was able to ignore the sharpness to get through the gig, but was definitely noticeable and discomfiting.

Yamaha TRBX605FM - Trans Black. Does everything I want it to do. Flatter radius neck is a pleasure to play. Active, and passive. Great workmanship. Nice 5 string for the bucks. Takes any type of string I want to experiment with. For the price, there isn't a bass that comes close to the Yamaha TRBX605FM. I would like to see a 6 string version of this Yamaha bass in the future About read more me: All Styles, and performances played on most of the usual suspects of musical instruments which include all species of keyboards, and string instruments that have been manufactured since the dawn of time. I got my start performing in the last century.

I have owned the previous version of this bass. Many have stated that the sound can be a little bland at times but with this new version, Alder/Flame maple top, it absolutely sings! The tone is very different though many people will denounce tonewoods but I am super satisfied with this purchase and look forward to many years of playing this bass!
